Emotional Mastery

Emotional mastery is complex as it has both physical and mental components. There are dozens of different emotions however we experience just 8-10 of these per day. Scientists find emotions difficult to study, as they are experienced subjectively by each person. Some say emotions are the language of the soul. I believe emotions are guidance from within, to help us return to truth and love.

One of the ways people deal with emotions is to change how they feel in the moment. This is a short term technique to change state, right now. This is most useful when you need to be functional at work or home with family. Changing state allows you to be at your peak for a short burst.

Examples of superficial ways to change state:

  • Coffee.
  • Exercise.
  • Listening to music.
  • Deep breathing.
  • Distraction.

The next level up in emotional mastery is dealing with an emotion or problem directly. You aren’t just looking to change how you feel. You are addressing the issue; changing your environment or your response to the environment. Dealing with the emotion directly can result in a positive life change.

Some examples of dealing with an emotion:

  • Leaving a difficult job or partner.
  • Solving the problem causing the stress.
  • Crying and expression.
  • Speaking with a psychologist.
  • Changing your routine to include more relaxation, positive thinking and doing what you love.

The most powerful way to master an emotional pattern is to work through the core issue. If I have a long term pattern of stress, anxiety and depression, this is your path. Simple relaxation and support won’t release it. You can work on the issue/s behind the emotional response, to clear that pattern for good.

This is the area to work on if you have persistent negative emotions. Changing your state or dealing directly with the issue may not work, if you do not also include the subconscious mindWhen emotional reaction has become a habit over months or years, it will take deeper work.

No one deliberately decides to be in stress, anxiety and depression. It happens automatically as a response from the deeper mind. This makes sense logically, we want to work at the level the problem exists. The following can be effective at working with the subconscious mind.

Some examples of practices that work on the subconscious level:

  • Yoga, Tai Chi, Qigong.
  • Hypnotherapy.
  • Demartini Method.
  • Therapies like acupuncture and psychosomatic therapy.
  • Spiritual work. Light work and shadow work.

Yoga, Tai Chi and Qigong are not like other workouts. When you practice these ancient mind-body practices you feel calm, invigorated and clear-headed. These energy exercises help you process emotions and balance the left and right sides of your brain. By deepening the mind-body connection with mindful breathing, stretches, postures and meditation, these ancient practices encourage your innate healing capacity.

Hypnotherapy can help you break out of old patterns that no longer serve you. Your subconscious mind controls your habits and automatic responses. When this part of your mind wants the same thing you do, you get results without having to think about it. After effective communication with the subconscious mind, the change becomes something that feels natural.

The Demartini Method is a systematic pre-determined series of questions directed toward assisting an individual to feel present, certain and grateful. The work neutralises an individual’s emotional charges, balances his or her mental and physical reactions, opens his or her heart and clears the mind. The Demartini Method is a reproducible science enabling individuals to discover the underlying order governing their apparent daily chaos.

An example of working on a core issue at a deeper level: I had high general anxiety and social anxiety for more than 15 years. Certain situations would set off an anxiety response and simply trying to will it away wasn’t working. 2 things that made a difference in stopping my anxiety pattern.

1) In 2014, I did 100 classes of Tai Chi and Yoga. For the first time in my life I had a whole month with no anxiety at all. Another lady in the class said her depression, “had massively improved.”

2) The therapy process called the Demartini Method. This helped me resolve the core issues behind my anxiety (which were related to rejection and self-judgement). My mind is more flexible to handle real life now. If things don’t go my way, I look for options and solutions. There is no need for cigarettes, comfort food and alcohol when you do the work.

Emotional mastery does not mean perfection. You still feel every emotion from time to time because you are a human being. Emotional mastery gives tools for a clear, loving perspective. I sincerely hope you have received at least one idea from this article that provides value!
